About Dr. McArthur

About Dr. McArthur – a Family Medicine physician who now works full-time in the Emergency Department — which means I’ve seen medicine from both ends of the spectrum. The quiet continuity of knowing a patient for years, and the urgent clarity of a critical moment. This unique vantage point has allowed me to witness firsthand the intricate balance between ongoing patient care and the fast-paced demands of emergency medicine. In the Emergency Department, every second counts, and critical decisions can mean the difference between life and death. I draw on this experience to guide my patients through their health journeys with a sense of urgency when necessary but also with the reassurance of continuity and consistent care.

That dual perspective shapes everything I write here. My goal is simple: translate what we actually know in medicine into language that helps real people make better decisions about their health. No jargon, no false certainty, no oversimplification. Through careful explanations, I aim to dispel the myths surrounding medical knowledge and empower individuals with the information they need to advocate for their own health. For instance, understanding common conditions like diabetes or hypertension can be daunting, but breaking them down into manageable concepts allows patients to grasp the essentials — leading to informed decisions and potentially better outcomes.

Outside the ER, I’m a licensed pilot — I earned my wings in 2005 and still find the cockpit one of the best places to clear my head. The discipline and precision required in aviation mirror those needed in medicine, and both fields continually teach me about the importance of preparation and adaptability. I’m also co-founder of UpKup Coffee, a functional mushroom coffee blending Colombian Arabica with NAD+, Lion’s Mane, and Shilajit. It started as a physician’s curiosity about evidence-based supplementation and became something I’m genuinely proud of. We crafted this product with the intention of providing a practical health boost in a delicious way. You can learn more about our journey and the benefits of functional mushrooms at upcupkoffee.com, as we continue to explore the intersection of wellness and everyday products.

I have three children from a previous chapter of my life — Bailey, William, and Malcolm. Malcolm passed away in November 2021, and not a day goes by that he isn’t with us. Grieving a child is a profound experience that has shaped my perspective on life and health significantly. Every day, I carry his memory with me, which drives my work and commitment to helping others. Sarah and I are raising our two children, Liam and Lane, together. Our family finds joy and solace in experiences like being on the water and getting lost somewhere with a good campfire. These moments remind us of the importance of connection and the beauty of nature, which can be incredibly healing.

Evidence-Based Health Insights is my way of giving patients what I wish more doctors had time to explain. In the fast-paced world of modern medicine, where time is often a luxury, I believe that taking the time to provide thorough explanations and insights can significantly improve patient understanding and compliance. Whether it’s discussing the latest research in chronic disease management or the importance of preventive care, I strive to offer a space where readers can learn and feel empowered to engage with their health care. Knowledge is power, and I want to ensure that everyone has access to the information they need to make informed health choices.

As a physician committed to community health, I often emphasize the role of preventive measures in maintaining health and well-being. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, and health screenings are essential components that should not be overlooked. These practices can detect potential health issues early, allowing for more effective interventions. For example, routine blood pressure checks can help prevent complications from hypertension, and screenings for certain cancers can save lives through early detection. By sharing stories of patients who have benefited from these preventive measures, I hope to inspire others to prioritize their health and take proactive steps.
